Washington Corridor, Houston

HOUSTON’S WASHINGTON CORRIDOR

Storefronts on Washington

The Washington Avenue corridor runs west from Downtown Houston, lined with restaurants, bars, music venues, and creative businesses. It borders the Old Sixth Ward, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, and sits minutes from Sawyer Yards, the Houston Heights, and Memorial Park. DealCo, the developer of Sawyer Yards, is restoring two historic buildings here: 2111 Washington Avenue, built in the early 1900s as Klinger’s Five and Dime, and 2115 Union Street, a classic bungalow that is a contributing structure in the Old Sixth Ward. Both are less than a mile from Downtown.

The Washington Avenue Vibe

Washington Avenue has grown into one of Houston’s best-known streets for dining and nightlife, while keeping the small storefronts and older buildings that give it character. Townhomes and apartments fill the surrounding blocks, the Victorian cottages and bungalows of the Old Sixth Ward are next door, and the artist studios of Sawyer Yards are a few blocks north. At 2111 Washington, DealCo is peeling back the layers of a vintage storefront, down to the original Klinger’s terrazzo entry, to create a space built for a successful, sustainable business.
